When most individuals think of Italy, they think of the multitude of sites in major cities like Rome and Tuscany. However, the country has much more to offer visitors outside of that. The following are a few alternative places to visit in Italy:
-The Strada Napoleonica. Meaning “Napoleon Road,” the Strada Napoleonica runs up a mountainside in Trieste. Visitors can take a tram to the top and walk down to the nearby water, or they can walk uphill and visit the towns of Opicina and Prosecco.
-Parma: The origin of Parmigiano Reggiano and the location of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) headquarters, Parma is popular among serious food and art lovers. The city has a unique artistic heritage and offers some of the best versions of Italy’s staple dishes.
-Lake Maggiore: Surrounded by the Alpine mountains, Lake Maggiore is home to a number of lakeside resort destinations, along with several hidden attractions and sites. These include the medieval church the Santa Caterina del Sasso and the Alpinia Botanical Gardens.
-Grotte di Frasassi: Located in the Marche region of Italy, the Frasassi caves offer a cold escape from the weather above. Tourists are guided through the caves either for a 70-minute walk or a two- or three-hour hike and can learn about different stories that feature the caves.
